Our mission is to empower individuals and families to navigate climate uncertainty by providing hands-on learning and resources in sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, and ecological living. By equipping communities with the skills and tools to restore food systems, build sustainably, manage micro-energy systems, and harness our relationships, we are catalyzing long-term sustainability and economic strength.

Black Oaks Center operates with a deep understanding that resilience begins with local knowledge and skills-building to create sustainable systems. Our approach is centered on:
ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT
We support Black farmers, entrepreneurs, and landowners in restoring economic power through sustainable agriculture and local commerce, ensuring wealth remains within the community.
SUSTAINABILITY & LAND STEWARDSHIP
We promote climate-smart farming techniques, regenerative agriculture, and ecological land management to restore the environment while supporting economic independence.
EDUCATION & SKILL-BUILDING
Through workshops, training programs, and on-site learning, we teach individuals and families how to be attuned to their ecosystems and make the relationships to both each other & land stronger and healthier. We depend on our ecosystem, ecosystem depends on us.
REBUILDING LOCAL FOOD SYSTEMS
We work to remap regional assets, creating a balanced, community-driven food network that contributes to local and regional food security. Our goal is to generate 5-10% of the nutritional needs of our communities—empowering people to put food on their own plates. From fred carter

A VISION FOR THE FUTURE
Located just 60 miles south of Chicago, Black Oaks Center envisions a strong regional food system that nourishes both rural and urban communities. By investing in land, knowledge, and people, we are creating a circular economy by providing fresh, health food grown in rural Pembroke Township to a major metropolis, Chicago. Not only does this improve the quality of food for Chicago and Pembroke, it generates sizable markets for Pembroke farmers.
